Landing in the Maldives feels exciting, but the airport process can seem unfamiliar when your holiday still includes a boat, seaplane or domestic flight. The basic sequence is straightforward: show your passport at immigration, collect your luggage, pass through customs, enter the public arrivals area and meet the named representative on your travel documents. The important detail is knowing whose name to look for and what to do if your bags or representative are not where you expect them to be.
This guide is written for UK travellers staying at Maldives resorts. Travellers continuing to Malé, Hulhumalé or an inhabited local island may follow a different onward-transport process.

A calm arrival begins before the aircraft touches down. Save the essential documents to your phone and keep an offline copy, because mobile data may not be active and airport Wi-Fi should not be your only plan.
Complete the Maldives Traveller Declaration
All travellers must complete a Traveller Declaration through the official IMUGA portal within 96 hours before arriving in the Maldives. The declaration is free. Maldives Immigration warns travellers to avoid unofficial websites that charge for completing it.
Take a screenshot of the completed declaration or confirmation. You may not be asked to display it if the information is already linked correctly, but having a copy makes it easier to resolve a query.
Check your passport and entry documents
British citizens normally receive a 30-day tourist visa on arrival and do not need to arrange a tourist visa in advance. Your passport must be machine-readable and, under current guidance, valid for at least one month from the date you arrive.
You should also be able to show a confirmed booking at a registered tourist establishment, a return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself during the stay if requested. Children need their own passports.

- The name of the resort, tour operator or local handling company meeting you.

Step 1: Follow the signs to immigration
After leaving the aircraft, follow the airport signs and staff directions to immigration. Velana International Airport opened its new Terminal 1 on 26 July 2025, but airline and operational arrangements can still change. Follow the route shown on the day rather than relying on an old terminal map or video.
At the immigration desk, present your passport and answer any routine questions clearly. Keep your accommodation and return-flight details accessible rather than buried in a checked suitcase.
There is no useful fixed promise for how long immigration will take. Arrival banks, aircraft size, staffing and other flights landing at the same time can all affect the queue. Build flexibility into any arrival-day plans instead of arranging a tightly timed activity at the resort.
Step 2: Collect your baggage
Once immigration is complete, follow the signs to baggage reclaim and check the information screens for your flight. Velana International Airport states that luggage is security-screened before it reaches the reclaim belt, and selected bags may require further inspection.
Count your bags before leaving the area. Check the baggage tags rather than relying only on suitcase colour, as similar luggage is common on leisure routes.
What if your bag is missing or damaged?
Report the problem to the airline or its ground-handling desk before leaving baggage reclaim. Ask for a written reference, usually called a Property Irregularity Report, and keep photographs of any damage, baggage tags and receipts for essential replacement items.
Tell your resort representative as well, because luggage delivered later may need to be coordinated with a speedboat, domestic flight or seaplane. Do not leave the airport assuming the resort can create the airline report for you afterwards.
Keep medication, travel documents, valuables, swimwear and enough essentials for the first day in your cabin bag. That is particularly sensible where your onward transfer has a separate baggage-handling process.
Step 3: Pass through Maldives customs
After collecting your luggage, follow the customs signs. Maldives customs rules are stricter than some travellers expect, even when an item was bought duty-free during the journey.
- Alcohol: do not bring alcohol into the Maldives. It can be held by customs, including duty-free purchases made in transit.
- Vaping products: the import and use of vaping devices and related products are prohibited under current Maldives rules.
- Medication: carry medicines in their original packaging and bring a prescription or medical letter for controlled or unusual medication.
- Other restricted goods: restrictions also apply to items such as pork products, pornography and materials considered contrary to local law.

Step 4: Enter the arrivals area and find your representative
After customs, you enter the public arrivals area. This is the point where most resort guests meet the person organising the next part of their journey.

Whose name should you look for?
Look at the exact meeting instructions on your confirmation. The sign may show:
- Your resort name.
- A tour operator or holiday company.
- A Maldives destination management company.
- A local handling agent.

- Stay in the arrivals area rather than leaving for Malé or boarding an unverified boat.

- Call the emergency or local contact number on your transfer confirmation.
- Tell the representative if your flight arrived late, your baggage was delayed or a traveller needs assistance.
Resort transfers are normally coordinated around international flight information. Supplying the correct flight number before travel is therefore essential, particularly when there has been an airline schedule change.

Step 5: Handover to your Maldives resort transfer

The three main transfer arrangements are:
- Speedboat: normally departs from the airport area and may operate during the day or evening, subject to the resort schedule and sea conditions.
- Seaplane: the representative usually helps with seaplane check-in and onward transport to the Noovilu Seaplane Terminal. Seaplanes operate in daylight and departure times are coordinated rather than chosen like a normal scheduled flight.
- Domestic flight and speedboat: you check in for a domestic flight to another Maldives airport, then continue by boat to the resort.

Seaplane baggage is handled differently
Trans Maldivian Airways currently states a standard allowance of 20 kg of checked baggage and 5 kg of hand luggage per passenger. Excess baggage is chargeable, subject to space, and individual bags must not exceed the operator's maximum weight.
Your checked bags may be handed over separately at the international terminal and transferred to the seaplane terminal without travelling beside you. In exceptional circumstances, operational weight limits can mean luggage follows on a later flight.
Label every bag with your name and resort. Keep medication, valuables, documents and first-night essentials with you. The allowance on your international ticket does not automatically override the limit on the Maldives transfer.

Trade-off to understand: seaplane timings depend on daylight and operational scheduling. A late international arrival can require an overnight stay near the airport, and the baggage allowance is usually lower than the long-haul allowance.
Kandima Maldives, Dhaalu Atoll
Who it suits: travellers who want a larger, activity-led resort in a more distant atoll and accept a multi-stage transfer.
How the arrival works: Kandima's published route uses a domestic flight from Velana to Dhaalu Airport followed by a speedboat to the resort.
Trade-off to understand: the domestic-flight option can operate beyond seaplane daylight hours, but it adds another check-in and a boat connection. The total journey depends on the domestic schedule and connection time.
The transfer should be considered when choosing the right Maldives resort, not treated as a minor detail after the island has already been selected.
